We sat down with producer Danny Pelfrey this week to learn more about his professional background and the work he does with Megatrax and Amusicom.
Megatrax: Tell us about your background. How did you get started in the music industry?
I started playing guitar when I was nine years old. My first idols were Chet Atkins, Jimi Hendrix and the Beatles – you know, the good stuff! I immediately knew that I would always be doing music in some way, even though I couldn’t say exactly how. So from then until now, I get up every day and think of myself as a musician first. Before I got into composing, arranging, and producing I was always focused on playing and had a successful career as a player. I went to Berklee in Boston, taught in Canada, then moved to Los Angeles where I recorded and toured with many great people, including, Diana Ross, Carole King, Tower of Power, Smokey Robinson, Bobby Caldwell, Bill Champlin, and many others. However I was always fascinated by the way music was put together, the “big picture” if you will, so I became drawn to spend more time composing and arranging. I started by arranging strings and horns on the sessions I was doing as a player, then moved more into arranging, composing and conducting. Producing has been a logical extension of this as I looked for more business and creative opportunities. I find it fascinating to now play the big picture as my instrument. All through my TV/Film/Game career I have been involved with production music, and with Megatrax in particular. I met Ron and John when I was a session musician many years ago and am delighted to still be working with them!
Megatrax: Since you became a producer, what have been the parts of the job you love the most?
There are so many! I find the job very satisfying on a creative level as I get to enjoy tremendous creative freedom. I have always enjoyed a wide variety of music and this is a great chance to keep things interesting in my work. I would say the broad spectrum of musical styles that I get to create is one of the main parts of the job I love the most. I would also say that getting to see something I’ve done on the air is very fulfilling. It’s always interesting to see how something is used – to see how someone else heard it and how it was important to them.
Megatrax: What are the things you’ve professionally done that you’re most proud of?
As a player, it would be my work with Carole King and Tower Of power, both of who remain friends to this day. I still play with Tower when they are in the area. As a composer/producer, I would say the TV show American Dreams was one of my favorites. It was set in the 60’s, which offered very fertile ground from a scoring perspective. I also produced songs for that show and got to work with may of today’s top performers, including Usher, Kelly Clarkson, Leann Rimes, Ritchie Sambora, and many others. Also I am proud of every CD in the Amusicom catalog!
Megatrax: Tell us about the work you’ve done with Megatrax & Amusicom.
Originally I started Amusicom as a resource for supplying the extra needs of the TV shows I was scoring. Especially since I already had the ear of the producer and access to the editors it seemed to make sense. From there the catalog took on a life of it’s own. Due to my past relationship with Megatrax they expressed interest in distributing us and we were delighted to come on board. They have always been a very forward-looking company, especially on the technology front. We have had a lot of use in the TV/Film area for source, which continues. Megatrax has helped us to get our music used by broadcasters, promos, ads, etc. Based on a long career in music and in the music business, all our tracks are well-conceived and produced at a high level to give today’s creative editors and producers everything they need from their music to tell their stories and grab their viewers.
Megatrax: What’s next for you? What have you got out on the horizon?
We intend to keep expanding our product line in very diverse and creative ways. The evolution of technology has given all of us the chance to collaborate and produce in ways we could only dream about in the past. Megatrax is starting some very exciting new ways to promote our catalog and structure deals that keep us growing and competitive. We all know there have been a lot of dramatic changes, in our business as well as all business, in these times, but I think that because of that we all continue to evolve and find new ways to stay in the game. This is a very exciting time to be in the business!
Thanks for your questions and I really like the new blog.
