beyond product placement
At a recent meeting with a creative director at a large cable network, we were discussing the promotions of their shows. As this has been a mainstay of production music and custom music for a long time, it’s fascinating to see where the industry has evolved to, staying ahead of the curve of getting their productions recognized and looking deeper into the ripple effect this has on music needs. Not so many years ago, product placement within a program was a somewhat novel yet “invisible” method of advertising a product. Now, the lines of product placement have gotten significantly more blurred as networks and their programs are offering their sponsors [...]

business books: a post from phil macko, svp of sales
I attended a webinar recently hosted by bestselling author Keith McFarland, and he made a comment that caught my attention. He said that in his opinion, the problem with business books is that they lead business owners and management folks to believe that there is a recipe to success, when in fact there is none. I am not sure how this statement helps him sell the two business books he has written, but I found it worthy of consideration. To provide background on his perspective, he explained that over the past several years he had interviewed the CEOs and management teams from nine “super growth” companies. As a point of [...]

was steve jobs good for music?
Steve Jobs’ effect on our culture was pervasive. Apple computers, then Apple music devices and cell phones– not to mention the software applications that found a home on Apple hardware, all brought irrefragable change to the way we access music and even think about music. In a recent post, I made the observation that the effect of the iPod + the iTunes store was enormous, partly, because it created the death of nostalgia. Every song we have ever loved is at our finger tips and in our ears right now, at this moment. We never have to long to hear a song from our distant past and are unable to [...]

RM: Just the whole idea that we get a lot of client requests that are coming in for all kinds of different styles and material, and I realized we needed to put together a series to meet these requests because they weren’t being met in our normal release schedule MX: What are some highlights? RM: [...]
licensing notes from leisa korn for 10/10/2011
While most of the country is enjoying the changing leaves this season, we sit here in sunny Southern California watching the leaves age gracefully, hoping we might see something other than brown or yellow burst across the landscape. And like the changes that come with each season, we can all share in the arrival of our latest statements from our performing rights organizations. The dollar value of each captured performance is sure to change with the seasons… either up or down and the impact of the performances that each society covers will sometimes change as well. And as you know from my previous blogs, I am particularly interested in the [...]

word of mouth times 800 million
Facebook’s recent announcement of partnerships with streaming music services such as Spotify, Rhapsody, Rdio, iHeartRadio and others represents yet another inevitable development in the unfolding of the digital media landscape. These partnerships allow Facebook users to see in real time what their friends are listening to, share playlists and make recommendations. (Using Spotify, I was easily able to put together a playlist and publish it on Facebook, although I haven’t received any comments yet about my rather unconventional and eclectic musical tastes…) This is an interesting development for a number of reasons. “Word of mouth” has always been a primary motivator when it comes to making purchase decisions, and certainly [...]
