licensing notes from leisa korn for march 5, 2012: civility edition

I find myself at a loss for words about my usual licensing lessons and instead feel a deep need to convey my thoughts on civility.

ci·vil·i·ty/səˈvilitē/ Noun: 1. Formal politeness and courtesy in behavior or speech. 2. Polite remarks used in formal conversation.

Synonyms: courtesy – politeness – comity – urbanity – complaisance

I sat and stared in horror as many of you did recently while news of another senseless school shooting dominated the airwaves. Kids killing kids and for reasons no one truly knows or understands. People lashing out at one another in pain and frustration. And we ask ourselves “what is the world coming to?” But then do you ask yourself as a citizen of this world what you can do to make a difference and affect a change? You can always start with the littlest of common courtesies that can have a big impact on someone else’s day.

So here I am on my soap box asking…Have you noticed lately that people are saying “Please,” “thank you” and “excuse me” less often? When you’re driving, are you being cut off more and wondering why the driver in front of you is not able to operate a turn signal? Have you honored their behavior with a hand gesture? Have you had a heavy door closed in your face when it could have easily been held open for you? Are you being snapped at by snarky co-workers and disgruntled retail employees? Are you being bullied in emails because someone else is taking out their anger and frustration on you? And just to stay in licensing mode for a moment, are you using music without obtaining proper licenses? YIKES! No wonder we are walking around frustrated, negative and in a lousy mood.

We really can choose to be in a good mood and put forth some positive energy. Try and think of something that brings a smile to your face…the unrestricted belly laugh of a child, the antics of a puppy or kitten, a colorful sunset, or the perfect piece of music for use in your program that was easy to find on our new website I know these sound simple on the surface, but really, find something to be happy about today no matter how small and put it out into the world. Take a deep breath and release at least one negative thought as you exhale. Try behaving with civility and perhaps civility will return to you. As Mr. Rogers so simply said “People don’t bite people.” Please everyone, stop biting and start smiling. ☺
