If you’ve read any of my blogs, you know that as a publisher, I’m passionate about making sure our composers receive their share of performance income for commercials and infomercials. This means I spend a great deal of time watching these very commercials and programs. So it was only natural that I spent 2 days in Vegas last week at a convention mingling with the people responsible for bringing us one of the most endearing expressions in the English language…”BUT WAIT!” We are particularly proud that our music was used in commercials that won major awards…you can hear us in the award winner for “Best Short Form Housewares”…Swivel Store and [...]

The Business Affairs/Customer Service department at Megatrax is really heating up this summer! We are busier than ever keeping up with the ever changing needs of our clients and composers. Here is just a little taste of what we currently have on our plates. Megatrax has signed with one of the largest audio detection services who can “accurately detect music underneath dialogue, sound effects or voiceovers in full duration even in the noisiest “dirty audio” environments.” The detailed reports we will receive and analyze will provide us with information about, where, when and how much of our music is being used in the captured markets. Combined with another service we [...]

I recently listed and sold my house in the blink of an eye…we weren’t prepared for this lightening fast transaction and of course, it caught us off guard. Suddenly we were plunged into a world of inspections, appraisals, repairs and stacks and stacks of papers to sign. We would have been completely lost without the help of our realtor and her knowledge and professionalism. Our escrow closed on time and now our only problem is finding somewhere else to live! But it occurred to me during this journey, that we needed a lot of assistance from various professionals to make this deal work, not unlike the kind of assistance Megatrax [...]
leisa korn goes to the ascap expo
I had the privilege of being a mentor last week at the 2011 ASCAP Expo. If you have never attended this amazing event, I strongly urge you to do so next year. This is a must for composers and musicians if you want to deeply understand the business you have chosen for your livelihood! There are so many informative seminars and panel discussions that it is difficult to even chose which ones to attend. I popped in to the music library discussion and found it a well rounded discussion between the libraries represented and the music supervisors on the panel. No surprises for me but the session was well attended [...]

Spring has finally sprung, at least here on the West Coast, and that means not only Easter, Passover, Spring skiing and tulips, but NAB…the annual megameeting of the National Association of Broadcasters in Las Vegas. To quote NAB, “More than just broadcasting, the NAB Show is the world’s largest digital media industry event attended by leading media, entertainment and communications professionals who share a passion for the next generation of video and audio content across multiple platforms — from television, radios and computers to phones, the big screen and beyond.” For us music providers, it is a chance to meet face to face with our clients from around the country [...]

With Megatrax celebrating its 20th Anniversary this year, (12 of which I’ve had the privilege to be a part of) I find myself reflecting on all the changes to the company itself and the industry at large. When I started here after spending time as a paralegal in an entertainment law firm specializing in music publishing, I was surprised to discover that there was such a thing as a music library! I remember calling my friends in the business and asking them if they had ever heard of “production music” and especially if they had heard of Megatrax. Those involved in licensing music for film and TV knew all about [...]

My favorite winter activity is my annual trip to Europe for meetings with the Megatrax subpublishers at Midem. Every January, I pack my warmest sweaters, hats and gloves and head first to London where I am greeted warmly by our EMI subpublishers from around the world. I then travel to the warmer south to Cannes for Midem and meetings with the rest of the world. It is always fascinating and enlightening to hear what is taking place in production music outside the US. For our composers, all the trends you’ve been concerned about in the US are happening all over the world and I will touch on a few: The [...]

As we begin a new year, I’d like to share our newest tool for tracking music usage on television…ARIA! Here’s a brief description directly from the source: “ARIA is an online music recognition application that identifies, tracks and automates the reporting of production music. Production music companies can obtain information regarding when and where their music was played on over 100 cable TV and local broadcast networks. The ARIA product not only identifies your music, but also provides program and station information and additional metadata needed for reporting. ARIA is customizable and allows you to sort, search, filter, collapse and expand results, save searches, print and export reports, listen to [...]

With the winter chill in the air, you might find yourself thinking more and more about blankets. I’m thinking about blankets too, but primarily the kind that that we grant to our clients for the use of the various Megatrax libraries. If you are an Annual Blanket license user you already know that you have access to a designated list of musical works (the entire offerings of Megatrax or a selected amount of albums), for a specific term, territory, fee, media and clearance(s). For example: $XXX for unlimited use of all Megatrax Libraries in Promotions, Commercials & Programs produced by and broadcast on television station JSTV in Justice, California from [...]

…And still more on clearing commercials and infomercials! Last month I explained the importance of proper reporting when it comes to licensing commercials from Megatrax. You have to make sure we know the exact product name, the length of time the commercial will be broadcast, where it will air for how long, etc. As an extension of this comes the 2-minute spot which is also known as direct response ad and stretching it even further is “paid programming” or INFOMERCIALS. On the surface, 2-minute ads and infomercials appear to just be really long, drawn out versions of basic commercials. The 2-minute spots usually contain music from different sources so I’m [...]
